"The very spring and root of honesty and virtue lie in good education."
- Plutarch (46 AD - 120 AD), Morals
Hundreds of thousands of East African children, from poverty stricken homes and many who are orphans of the killer disease AIDS, are without basic primary education. Large numbers of children will probably end up in the streets begging or turn to prostitution as a way out of the trap of deprivation. For them, an education is literally a chance for survival; a lifeline where they will get an opportunity to contribute to their community and nation's much needed development. They don't want handouts; they just want a chance to help themselves!
The purpose of the Fields of Life Education Programme is to ensure that standards of excellence are monitored and maintained in accord with Fields of Life core values and beliefs within the schools constructed. It is Fields of Life policy that all schools will be inspected, guided and advised in standards and practices for the furtherance of achieving educational excellence. Fields of Life works under the statutory requirements laid out by the Ministry of Education and the relevant governments in East Africa. However, Fields of Life reserves the right to caution any misconduct which is considered unacceptable or compromises the delivery of quality education, and endeavours to work with the school to resolve and address areas of concern of lack within the facility.
We could not provide a complete overview of our Education Programme without taking the time to cover the effectiveness of our Child Sponsorship programme. This programme is an opportunity for a sponsor to embark on a relationship with an East African child in a supportive capacity. Your encouragement would bring hope and concretely demonstrate to a child that there are individuals who care about their growth, education and development.
Reasons to sponsor a child:
1. Fields of Life supports not only community-based projects such as child immunisation programmes, school building projects and providing safe, clean water supplies, but it facilitates a sponsor's one-to-one support of a child. Your funds are sent directly to that child safely through our Kampala office and is makes a real and tangible difference to the lives of children and to their families.
2. Many Irish families as well as several others abroad already sponsor children and receive regular updates from their sponsored child as well as photos and progress reports.
3. You are helping to reinforce the backbone of the community, because for every child sponsored, additional people affected. Once the child is educated, he or she will hopefully contribute to the growth and well being of that community in a positive, enriching fashion.
4. Fields of Life's is committed to other programmes which reinforce the welfare of the community as well as the child. However, the focus begins with the child and then moves to the village where the school is built, with programmes to ensure that there is clean drinking water, health and sexual education and an opportunity for entrepreneurial growth. These programmes exist to ensure that progress is sustained and that the benefits of this sponsorship are available to future generations.

Bernard Masaba, the Fields of Life Education Advisor is responsible for inspecting the schools (constructed by Fields of Life) and is charged with ensuring that the educational standards are maintained at a level that is consistent with FOL expectations. Bernard also conducts workshops and participates in periodic conferences hosted by FOL. He is the eyes and hears of what is happening within the schools and to the children as he is in the field travelling from one school to the next. Given that by the end of the year Bernard's goal is to assess all of the schools, he indeed has a challenge ahead of him!
