If you have stayed in the Fields of Life Shalom Guesthouse, you have probably had the pleasure of meeting Barbara Nantongo. Barbara has worked with us, full time, since 2007. We thought you might like to get to know her a little better…
Tell us a bit about yourself:
My name is Barbara Nantongo, I am the Shalom Guesthouse Manager.
I started school when I was 3 years old, just because I was very noisy, and I would make my mum run mad; so she decided to take me to a daycare to give her some peace!
I am from a Christian family. I am ambitious and also a very determined individual, yet pleasantly calm. I encourage fighting for what you desire and believe in, and doing it through God, because nothing great comes easy and with God everything is possible!
Tell us a fact about yourself:
Growing up, I loved music and dance. I was a very good dancer and I used to participate in my school and church choirs, and I used to dance four cultural dances in Uganda; but all that disappeared when I joined secondary school, because I thought I was a grown-up now.
While at it, I joined cheerleading, which was also fun because we had to move from one school to another competing in basketball, we never won any trophies but I got a story to tell my kids:
I had a tough time growing up because of some challenges I faced as a girl, but I thank God that He made me grow out of it, and I grew up to be the strong lady that I am today.
When did you first get involved with Fields of Life and why?
This happens to be my first job, from school to Fields of Life, I started working when I was still young, I feel so blessed to have grown working for this organization.
At first, I came as a part time worker because I was still a student, doing a course in catering and hotel management, I became full time in 2007 after finishing my studies.
I loved it because it is a Christian organization and they help children. Since I started working here when I was still in school, I knew what it meant to not have school fees. I was also sponsored through a different organization, so I felt like working in an organisation which does something similar for children. I would like to pay back the goodness that I received!
What is your favorite thing about this job?
I enjoy meeting different people from different countries and also making them feel at home, if we get a guest, and at the end of his stay he/she says thank you with a smile, that makes my day!
What has been the most exciting thing since you started?
Seeing the children we sponsored graduating and getting good jobs! Also, I have met so many people and made so many friends and because of the friends I have met in Fields of Life, they sponsored me to travel to the UK two times, it was a dream come true.
What 3 words would you describe yourself?
Hard-working, ambitious, good friend.
