Meet Filbert Ajax

We would like to introduce you to our Deputy Executive Director, Filbert Ajax, who is based in our Kampala Office. Filbert is from an education background and, after 11 years of working within the education sector, he joined Fields of Life in 2012. Here’s what you need to know about Filbert…

Tell us a bit about yourself:

My name is Filbert Idha Ajax, the Deputy Executive Director of Fields of Life. I am a Christian, and the fifth child in a family of seven siblings. I am a professional teacher and, for over 11 years, I have been involved in Uganda’s education sector, though the past six years saw me more involved in school health and development evaluations.

Tell us a fact about yourself

I was a very good boxer, probably at my peak, by the time I reached primary two class, aged seven! I used to watch a professional boxer train near home every day and I would replicate exactly what I observed in school the following day! In school the bigger boys nick-named me “Oduru” after the boxer! But these skills were caned out of me by my primary two class teacher!

When did you first get involved with Fields of Life and Why?

I joined Fields of Life in February 2012. Before joining, I was head of the Biology Department in a local school and at the same time coordinating adolescent health programmes targeting school children. So Fields of Life presented a perfect opportunity for me to reach more schools across Uganda as well as grow spiritually. And I am happy that I took up the opportunity.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

Certainly, my first love of interacting with children and teachers as we explore healthy living, has not left me! But along the way, as my role has changed, I have come to love those moments when colleagues share their challenges and I contribute to getting a viable solution that furthers the vision of Fields of Life. It spices up my job any day!

What has been the most exciting thing since you started?

Monday devotion time, where we build each other spiritually, socially and professionally! And the casual chat over lunch where we talk about everything, including which staff members need to get married now!

What 3 words would you use to describe yourself?

Anybody can serve!
